Joseph, age 32, enlisted in the Home Guard on 5 April 1862 in Cahaba, Alabama for 90 days. Almost two months later he enlisted in the Confederate States Army on 31 May 1862 in Cahaba, Dallas County, Alabama. He was mustered as a Private in Company D, Lewis Battalion Alabama Cavalry. On 24 June 1864, Joseph was wounded in action, severely in thigh, at Lafayette, Georgia and was taken prisoner of war. He was received at Camp Chase Confederate Prison on 10 September 1864 where he died on 12 January 1865.

Joseph was born 7 July 1830 in Dallas County, Alabama to Nathaniel Burdine Wilson and Jane Jones. He married Mary Elizabeth High on 9 October 1851 in Dallas County, Alabama. From this union they had four known children: William Henry "Willie", Texana, Reuben, and George.
